The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring a new outbreak of coronavirus. Initially the 2019 Novel Coronavirus was specific to China, but now it has been reported in a number of countries, including the United States. There is limited knowledge on how it is transmitted and currently there is no vaccine or commercially available diagnostic test.
Healthcare personnel should use standard precautions which includes use of personal protective equipment with proper hand and environmental hygiene. We’ve put together a product formulary to help you adhere to the recommended precautions.
The CDC recommends the following standard precautions to protect you and your patients:
- Perform hand hygiene
- Follow cough etiquette principles and cover your cough
- Properly handle, clean and disinfect patient care equipment and devices
- Clean and disinfect the environment appropriately
- Handle textiles and laundry carefully
In addition to these standard precautions, the CDC has also issued guidance on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare professionals. For the general public, CDC does not recommend the use of face masks or respirators.
