This article is general information, not medical advice. Always follow the instructions from your doctor, nurse or infusion team about caring for your PICC line.
Short answer: For showering, the best PICC line cover is a reusable waterproof sleeve long enough to seal above and below your dressing, with a snug seal that does not squeeze. Choose the size by measuring your bicep, since that is where the top seal sits.
Types of PICC line covers
"PICC line cover" can mean two different products, and the difference matters:
- Waterproof shower sleeves (often called PICC line protectors): a tube of waterproof material with a seal at each end. You wear it only in the shower or bath to keep the dressing dry.
- Everyday PICC line sleeves: soft mesh or fabric sleeves worn during the day to hold the line in place and stop it snagging on clothes. They are not waterproof.
- Plastic wrap and tape: a makeshift option. It can work in a pinch, but it often leaks at the edges and the tape can pull on skin.
- Disposable shower covers: single-use plastic covers, handy for travel, but you need a new one every time.
If your goal is showering, you want a waterproof sleeve. If your goal is keeping the line tidy under clothes, ask your care team about a mesh sleeve.
What to look for in a PICC line shower sleeve
- A seal at both ends. The top seal on your upper arm does most of the work. It should sit flat against your skin without leaving deep marks.
- Enough length. The sleeve should cover the whole dressing with room to spare above and below it.
- The right size for your bicep. A sleeve that is too loose lets water in; one that is too tight is uncomfortable and can press on the line.
- Latex-free material. Important if you or your care team want to avoid latex.
- Easy to rinse and dry. If you shower daily for weeks, a sleeve that dries quickly matters. Many people keep two so one is always dry.
How to measure your arm
Use a soft tape measure. Measure around the widest part of your upper arm (your bicep), then around your forearm. Pick the size that covers both. For our sleeve, the sizes are:
| Size | Sleeve length | Bicep | Forearm |
|---|---|---|---|
| S/M | 14.5 in | 8.5 to 12 in | 6.5 to 10 in |
| L/XL | 14.5 in | 11.5 to 16 in | 10 to 15 in |
| XXL | 17.5 in | 16 to 21.5 in | 10.5 to 19 in |
Between sizes? Go by your bicep measurement.
Where to buy a PICC line cover
- Your infusion team or hospital. Some provide a cover or recommend a specific type for your dressing. Ask before you buy.
- Pharmacies and medical supply stores. Many carry a few covers, though the range of sizes is often limited.
- Online. The widest choice of sizes. Measure your arm first so you order the right one.
How to use and care for it
- Check that your dressing is in place and your arm is dry.
- Stretch the top opening and slide the sleeve up your arm until the dressing is fully covered.
- Make sure both seals sit flat, then shower with your arm out of the direct spray.
- Afterward, dry the outside, roll it off, rinse it with mild soap and water, and let it air-dry.

Frequently asked questions
Is a PICC line sleeve the same as a PICC line protector?
Not always. "Sleeve" often means an everyday mesh sleeve, while "protector" or "shower cover" usually means a waterproof cover. Check whether the product says waterproof.
Can I swim with a PICC line cover?
Most care teams advise against submerging a PICC line. Ask yours before assuming any cover is suitable for swimming.
Do I need two covers?
Not necessarily, but many people like having a dry spare if they shower every day.
Does a cover replace my dressing?
No. It goes over your dressing to keep water out.
