Chux vs Underpads vs Bed Pads: What's the Difference?

By the Blue Shoe Guys team 2 min read

Blue disposable underpads also called chux or bed pads

Shopping for these pads is confusing because they go by many names: chux, underpads, bed pads, blue pads, incontinence pads, pee pads. In most cases they are the same product. Here is how the names line up.

The names, explained

  • Underpads: the general term. A flat, absorbent pad that goes under a person or pet to protect a surface.
  • Chux: a nickname for disposable underpads. It started as a brand name and became a common word, especially in hospitals and nursing settings.
  • Bed pads: underpads used on a bed. The name describes where they go.
  • Blue pads: a nickname based on the traditional blue backing.
  • Incontinence pads (bed pads): the same pad, described by its use. Do not confuse these with the small liners worn inside underwear. Those are a different product.
  • Pee pads: usually means puppy training pads, though the same style of pad works for both.

Is there a real difference?

The name does not tell you how good the pad is. The differences are in construction:

  • Layers: more layers usually means more strength and absorbency. Ours has eight.
  • Backing: a waterproof polyethylene film layer is what protects the mattress.
  • Top sheet: non-woven fabric feels drier against skin than paper.
  • Size: common sizes are 23 x 36, 30 x 36 and 36 x 36 inches. See our size guide.
  • Pack count: a 50-count pack costs less per pad than small bundles.

Underpads vs adult diapers

Underpads protect surfaces, such as beds and chairs. Briefs and diapers are worn on the body. Many people use both together.
