The polypropylene fabric repels water and holds up to splashes, damp floors, and wet grass, but the covers aren't designed for standing in water. We test the fabric for water resistance instead of just claiming it.
Water-resistant vs. waterproof: what's the difference?
Water-resistant fabric slows or blocks water from passing through under normal conditions, such as walking across a wet driveway or a mopped floor. Waterproof materials are sealed against water even under sustained pressure or submersion. Disposable shoe covers sit in the first group: great for everyday wet conditions, not for wading through puddles.
How is water resistance tested?
A common way to measure a fabric's water resistance is the hydrostatic pressure test. Water pressure is applied to the material and increased at a constant rate until leakage spots appear on the surface. How long the fabric holds out before leaking shows where it sits on the water-resistance spectrum. Our shoe cover material needs to pass a set level of water resistance before it is used in our covers.
What are our shoe covers made of?
Our covers are made from 100% homopolymer polypropylene. The material is non-toxic, PVC-free, phthalate-free, and latex-free. They are produced in an FDA-registered facility and are clean room rated. In testing, the fibers did not swell and open gaps that hold water, and the fabric did not rupture under high hydrostatic pressure.
